Character Name: Axel
Series: Kingdom Hearts
Timeline: Post chasing Kairi after she tries to run away from him at the beach
Canon Resource Link: Wikia (Axel) || (Lea)

Character Background: Before Axel was Axel, he was a boy named Lea. He lived in Radiant Garden and did what normal teens did. Hang out with friends, eat junk food, pick fights with sad blonde kids sitting on the ground, sneak into big castles, and then get thrown out of said big castle. His life revolved around being mischievous with Isa. What a rascal, I know. What happens after isn't actually known. Only that he loses his heart somehow and becomes a Nobody, a body and soul left behind when a person's heart is stolen. Eventually he joins Organization XIII as their eighth member. But, even without a heart Axel can still imitate how he acted when he was Lea and mimic emotions from memory alone.

Being assigned as Roxas' Official Babysitter when the newbie joins the Organization, he forms a close friendship with him. At first he found Roxas a bit boring. Because you know, Roxas was a complete chatterbox at the beginning (he wasn't). Regardless of that Axel shows him the "icing on the cake" and treats the kid to his personal favorite dessert, sea salt ice cream. Going up on the clock tower after missions and eating ice cream together becomes part of their daily schedule until Axel has to leave for Castle Oblivion.

The reason Axel is sent to Castle Oblivion is simple. Weed out the traitors within the Organization. He does so with ease and this is where his ability to be manipulative rears its head. Mostly everything he says during this time to the other members is a lie. And they believe it. He slithers himself into Marluxia and Larxene's little duet and he even gets Larxene to admit that there is a plan to usurp Xemnas and take over without her noticing she did so. But he still had to prove himself for them to fully reveal everything to him. The perfect opportunity comes up when Vexen decided to be a little blabbermouth to Sora. Axel is ordered to take him out before he reveals "too much". He does so without hesitation and with minimal effort, showing that even though he can pretend he has emotion, he is still a Nobody. With one member down and finally the full trust of two others, he uses this time to free Naminé and let her go to Sora (who he has a small "soft spot" for, Roxas being his Nobody and all).

Eventually Larxene is defeated by Sora and Axel confronts Marluxia. The fact that he is actually a double agent is finally revealed and they gear up to fight. Unfortunately for Axel, Marluxia uses Naminé as a shield. And although he didn't very much care about that at all, Sora did. And so he gets into a fight with Sora instead of Marluxia. Sora defeats him and Axel (most likely) takes it as a sign that the boy is ready to take on Marluxia. He leaves Sora, telling him that saving him was worth it, and heads down to the basement levels of Castle Oblivion. There he uses the Riku Replica that Vexen made as a tool to get rid of Zexion who "found out too much". With the combination of Sora, Riku, and Axel, all the members sent to Castle Oblivion were terminated. His mission done, he heads back home.

He shows up in Twilight Town and surprises Roxas who thought he was dead along with the rest of the Organization members in C.O. They go back to their daily routine of eating ice cream at the clock tower and Axel notices that Roxas is more outgoing than before. He also finds out about Xion who had become Roxas' other friend while he was gone. He meets her as well and she joins in on their clock tower escapades.

While Axel's friendship with Roxas and Xion grows stronger, his frienship with Saïx (who was his best friend when they were younger) treads on thin ice. Throughout 358/2 days, Saïx comments on how Axel has changed and how he keeps meddling with the plans for Roxas and Xion that Xemnas had. And he has. He writes in his journal on how creepy it is that Roxas and Xion act like they have hearts, even when they aren't supposed to. And the worse part is that they make him feel like he has one too. He feels happy with them. And he worries about them too (Which is funny because at the beginning he would always comment to Roxas about how he can't actually worry about things! You need a heart for that after all).

It really starts to show once Xion runs away. At first Axel doesn't seem to really care. Even going as far as getting into a fight with her and knocking her unconscious via pressure points. Although it could have all been because she rose her keyblade against Roxas when he was trying to get her back. Afterward, he acts like it wasn't a big deal and Roxas ends up giving him the silent treatment (ouch!!). He gradually becomes more anxious about his two best friends and what Xemnas has planned for them. So much that he follows them when they are sent on a mission that would have made them fight each other to the death. He stops them and later on, he lets Xion run away again. Because of what she is, the farther away she is from the Organization the better. Except Axel is secretive and never exactly tells Roxas this. So Roxas found out himself along with the fact that Axel kept it all from him. That being the final straw, Roxas leaves the Organization as well and a desperate Axel tries to stop him. It doesn't work and he has to see his other best friend leave too.

The very next day Axel is given orders to track down Xion. He catches her in Twilight Town and angrily lets out how he is sick and tired of both her and Roxas going around doing whatever they want while thinking there are no consequences and how he would always be there to bring them back. They fight, he knocks her unconscious like before, and takes her back only to go unconscious himself.

Later on when he wakes up, he finds out all about Roxas and Xion. Their fight, Xion's death, and Roxas' capture by Riku and DiZ. He also finds a parting gift from Roxas. It was the "WINNER" popsicle stick that Roxas had been saving since the beginning.

He is given orders to retrieve Roxas, just like he had been given order to get Xion before. Except he finds Roxas in a virtual Twilight Town with his memory completely erased. He tries to get Roxas to remember everything but it doesn't work and he is kicked out of the virtual town for the time being. He tries again later and this time Roxas reveals that he knows they are best friends. Axel, wanting to make sure it was true, asks him what the name of the Organization leader is. When Roxas doesn't know, he grows upset and sends Dusks after him. Yet again his plan is foiled and Roxas escaped. He becomes despondent and realizes that the Roxas he knew will never come back. Even though later on Roxas does regain his memories, but to Axel it was too late, he was already fed up. They fight, and Axel disappears like with what he did to Sora in C.O., telling Roxas he will meet him in the next life.

Roxas goes back into Sora, and Axel is entrusted with keeping Naminé safe. She tells him about how even though they are Nobodies, they still have people who are important to them. And with that Axel decides to try and get his friend back again.

He also decides that it is a GREAT idea to go and kidnap Kairi! Want to get to Sora? You get Kairi. He wanted to somehow make Sora turn into a heartless again. That way Roxas would be reborn. It will totally work. Not. His plan doesn't go very well. She escapes. The second time he kidnaps her doesn't go well either. But instead, this time she is grabbed by Saïx. When Sora finds out that he was the one who had grabbed Kairi, he genuinely apologizes, realizing his mistake and telling Sora to go save her.

When Sora and his friends are ambushed by a bunch of Nobodies, Axel comes to their rescue, helping them fight. Because even though everything Axel had been doing up to that point was to bring Roxas back again, he had grown fond of Sora too. So much that he attempts a sort of suicide bomb attack when he realizes there were too many enemies. When Sora asks him why, Axel says it's all because of Roxas. He wanted to see him again because Roxas made him feel like he had a heart, like he had real emotions again. And so does Sora. With the last bit of strength he had left, Axel opens a door for Sora and his friends to escape through before he completely faded into the darkness. Naminé later reveals that he actually isn't dead, just wandering in the Realm of Darkness waiting to find his heart again.

So even though at the beginning he was an emotionless Nobody like the all the other Organization members, spending time with Roxas, Xion, and Sora made it so he started to develop real feelings again.

Abilites/Special Powers: Axel's title is The Flurry of Dancing Flames, and for good reason too. He is quick and agile. And he sort of jumps all over the place when he's fighting. He has control over fire and uses it plenty. He is able to surround the area with fire, both the walls and floor. He also covers his chakrams -the weapon he uses- with it and throws them about like boomerangs.

Like the rest of the Organization, Axel has the ability to open "Corridors of Darkness", which is a quick way to travel from world to world. And he has control over high ranking Nobodies called Assassins (but you don't have to worry about that in the mansion).

Third-Person Sample: Now this was perplexing. He was sure he had just left the beach when he went after Kairi. But here he was again. At the same place. Or at least he thought so. He could see Destiny Island off on the horizon, but everything else was different. There were no houses or people, just one very big mansion off in the distance. And snow. That was probably the weirdest thing.

None of that mattered though, he realizes. Who cares if it's Christmas Town all of a sudden! With the portal that Kairi went through gone, so was her trail. And that put a very unnecessary damper on Axel's plans for reaching Sora, or more importantly, his best friend. The longer he waited meant the longer it would take to finally be able to see Roxas again. And maybe apologize. Maybe.

But first thing is first. Even with the leather coat and hood, it was cold. And he needed to find out what was up with this place that was Not-Destiny-Island too. It might become important and Axel was all about taking advantage of the situation at hand. The mansion seemed like the perfect place to start his reconnaissance (and get someplace warm).

He takes one last confused look around before leaving the beach.

First-Person Sample: [ On his lovely walk toward the mansion, Axel had noticed one of his pockets was heavier than usual. And upon inspection he found a small device. One with a lot of buttons. What do you do in a situation like this? You press them of course! All of them. At first it broadcasts audio only and the sound of snow crunching beneath someone's feet is heard. ]

This thing doesn't make any sense. [ He presses another button and the audio stops. Another buttom makes it video instead and a nice view of the sky along with some strands of red hair are seen. ]

What is this thing even fo- [ Off. ] Come on. [ On. ] Way to be useless. [ Off. ] You would think it would come with some instruction! [ On. And finally instead of the sky, his enter face is shown. And he somehow looks annoyed and amused all at the same time. ]

Sheesh am I glad we don't have these back home.
